Under the 'wise' guidance of their parent, Geely, the peeps over at Volvo have been some of the most fervent proponents of going all-electric for years, even though they didn't necessarily have the chops to back up their voices.
In fact, the XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge (now renamed EX40 and EC40, respectively) were the only ones that timidly attempted to support the EV cause with little to no sales impact.
Luckily, starting with 2023, things got a little better as production of the dedicated all-electric EX30 and EX90 models finally took off after numerous initial setbacks.
The rumor mill, of course, wants to know what comes next, though, especially as Volvo is now backtracking on its promise to go all-electric by 2030.
In fact, it seems that Volvo is striving to adapt to current demands – they reintroduced some models in markets where they were retreated based on popular demand, for example.
But they also remain committed to EVs, it seems. More precisely, while ICE models are supposedly here to stay even past 2030, Volvo is now working on two all-electric fronts.
One is the mid-size area where the company's most advanced architecture, SPA3, will underpin the next model in the series – EX60 – the EV option if you don't want an XC60 because it burns dead dinosaurs.
This will be the most technologically advanced platform with mega-castings and a structural battery, among other things.
Alas, Volvo is not only thinking about that but also seeks to help the accounting department with additional high-profit models – the new ES90 will be Volvo's flagship electric sedan backed by the same architecture as the on-sale EX90 with the same powertrains and tech features.
It will be released this year, and the rumor mill believes it won't come alone – instead, it could also be joined by a new EV90 station wagon that sits alongside both the ICE-powered V90 and V90 Cross Country.
Estate models are falling out of favor these days – especially in America – but that doesn't mean they're dead just yet.
Look at BMW bringing the all-new M5 Touring over across the big pond (aka the Atlantic Ocean) if you need an eloquent example.
Outside of North America, it's a logical decision – the hypothetical EV90 from Volvo will compete with models like the Audi A6 e-tron Avant station wagon, and there are also many Chinese options to choose from these days, including models like the Nio ET5.
Anyway, suppose you want to take a look at the hypothetical 2025 or 2026 Volvo EV90 all-electric station wagon with Cross Country flavor and EV powertrains.
In that case, the virtual artist vburlapp (on social media or burlappcar.com) has recently prepared this unofficial, hypothetical design project. So, what do you think?
