On Wednesday night, a Piedmont Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 slid off a taxiway in Michigan during a snowstorm.
Two days ago, a Piedmont Airlines Embraer ERJ-145 operated American Airlines flight 5924 from Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) to Cherry Capital Airport in Traverse City, Michigan.
The flight departed Chicago at 18:08 and touched down in Michigan after a quick 54-minute flight. After landing, the plane slid off a taxiway.
A statement from the airport said,
“American Airlines Flight 5924 operated by Piedmont Airline landed at TVC just after 8:00 PM December 4, 2024. The aircraft an Embraer 145 with 44 passengers and 3 crew taxied to the ramp. Upon turning onto the taxiway that leads to the ramp the aircraft left the pavement into the snow. No injuries to report, all passengers were shuttled to the terminal.”
According to WoodTV, much of Michigan was hit with the storm on Wednesday night, which impacted Thursdays operations as well.
Cherry Capital Airport reported several delays and some cancelations after the storm.
The aircraft in question is a 23-year-old Embraer plane. It remained on the ground in Traverse City until the following morning when it flew back to Chicago.
The flight to Chicago was scheduled to depart at 06:40 but instead departed at 11:04.
As the plane is used for short flights, this specific aircraft is sometimes deployed on up to eight flights in one day. For example, on November 29, N651AE operated six flights:
- Roanoke - Charlotte
- Charlotte - Florence
- Florence - Charlotte
- Charlotte - Florence
- FLorence - Charlotte
- Charlotte - Charlottesville
- Charlottesville - Charlotte
- Charlotte - Evansville
On that day, the plane’s longest flight was the last one of the day, AA5787 from Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) to Evansville Regional Airport (EVV).
The shortest flight that day was the first Charlotte - Florence flight, which took just 28 minutes.
Piedmont Airlines is one of several American Airlines wholly-owned subsidiaries. The airline was founded in 1931 in Maryland, and now, operates more than 400 daily flights.
According to the airline, it operates from three AA hubs to more than 55 cities nationwide.
More than half of Piedmont’s operations are concentrated in Charlotte. But the airline also operates from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) and Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD).
According to Cirium, an aviation analytics firm, Piedmont has more than 6,300 flights scheduled from CLT this month.
The breakdown of flights per hub is below:
- Chicago - 1,190 flights
- Philadelphia - 3,858
- Charlotte - 6,317
The busiest route in Piedmont’s network is from Charlotte to Charlottesville, Virginia. Data shows there are 200 flights in each direction, breaking down to four to eight daily roundtrips.
As each flight has 50 seats, there are 10,000 seats available in each direction.
From Chicago, the airline’s busiest route is to Harrisburg International Airport (MDT) in Pennsylvania.
There are 78 flights in each direction in December, ranging from one to three daily roundtrips. This totals 7,800 seats roundtrip.
