Delta Air Lines has removed its direct flights between Boston and Honolulu from sale, with the route, which was scheduled to resume in November, no longer present on the airline’s booking system.
Ending flights to Honolulu
As flagged by Ishrion Aviation, Delta Air Lines no longer plans to return to flying between Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and Honolulu Daniel K. Inouye International Airport (HNL).
The airline was scheduled to return to the route in November with four weekly flights between Thursday and Sunday, with the frequency increasing to daily in December, according to data from the aviation analytics company Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning tool.
Looking at Delta Air Lines’ booking engine, it becomes clear that the carrier is no longer offering direct flights on the route.
For example, on November 8 (a Saturday), the fastest option to fly from Boston to Honolulu is to transfer in Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).
On December 6, also a Saturday, the fastest way to get to Hawaii from Boston on Delta Air Lines would be to switch onto flight DL382 at Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC).
Short-lived route
Then, it said that it would add services from Boston to Honolulu and from Seattle to Miami during the then-upcoming winter season, which began in October 2024.
The Boston-Honolulu itineraries began on November 21, 2024, while flights between Seattle and Miami began on December 21, 2024.
At the time, Joe Esposito, the Senior Vice President of Network Planning at Delta Air Lines, said that over the past decade, the airline has been dedicated to refining its domestic network, and in 2024, it planned to strengthen its roots within its hubs to match the increased demand.
“In cities like Boston, Atlanta, and Seattle, we’re providing more choices and seamless connections to sought-after destinations.”
After Delta Air Lines’ exit, Hawaiian Airlines should remain the sole carrier on the route. Operating up to five weekly flights (between May and August, four weekly for the remainder of the year), the Hawaiian carrier will serve Boston to Honolulu flights with the Airbus A330-200.
Delta Air Lines planned to operate the itinerary during the upcoming winter season with an A330-300 , Cirium’s Diio Mi data showed.
Longest domestic route
One peculiarity about the route is that it remains the longest domestic route in the US, with Cirium’s Diio Mi showing the filed distance as 8,200 kilometers (4,427 nautical miles).
The second and third-longest routes are between Honolulu and New York John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Honolulu and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) at 8,019 km (4,329 NMI) and 7,986 km (4,312 NMI), respectively.
In November, when Delta Air Lines should exit the Boston-Honolulu route, the airline and Hawaiian Airlines will fly between New York-JFK and Honolulu, while United Airlines is the only one running itineraries from Newark to the main airport in Hawaii.
Meanwhile, Cirium’s Diio Mi indicated that the longest domestic route that does not land or depart in Alaska or Hawaii is between Miami and Seattle, at a filed distance of 4,384 km (2,367 NMI). During the same month, American Airlines , Alaska Airlines , and Delta Air Lines will operate the itinerary between Florida and Washington.
