A Delta Airlines plane that crashed upside down today was caught on a flight tracker making a dramatic U-turn before hitting the tarmac.
The Delta 4819 flight was en route from Minneapolis to Toronto when it crashed into Toronto Pearson International Airport today, leaving fifteen injured.
According to FlightRadar24, the plane took an unexpected detour over Brampton towards Markham, then sharply turned back towards the airport.
Following the crash, the airport confirmed the incident in a statement:
"Toronto Pearson is aware of an incident upon landing involving a Delta Airlines plane arriving from Minneapolis," and "Emergency teams are responding. All passengers and crew are accounted for."
Toronto's paramedics have reported at least fifteen casualties. John Nelson, a survivor, broadcasted the aftermath live on Facebook, saying: "We just landed... Our plane crashed... It's upside down. The fire department is on-site."
He described the evacuation amid billowing smoke, noting that "most people appear to be okay", reports the Mirror.
Delta has issued a statement regarding the incident involving Endeavor Flight 4819. They said:
"Delta is aware of reports of Endeavor Flight 4819 operating from Minneapolis/St. Paul to Toronto-Pearson International Airport as involved in an incident.
We are working to confirm any details and will share the most current information on news.delta.com as soon as it becomes available," the airline confirmed.
Meanwhile, Pearson International Airport has been battling with flight delays after being hit by heavy snowfall over the weekend
The airport warned, "We are in for another weekend of winter weather. Our surface maintenance specialists are hard at work clearing the airfield so we can keep planes moving safely.
Significant weather events may cause airlines to cancel or delay flights," in a post last Sunday.
The connection between the recent snowstorm and the plane crash remains uncertain, despite the airport's update on clear runways just hours before the tragedy.
