Phasing out the Embraer E190 fleet
Last year, JetBlue announced that it would soon be phasing out its remaining fleet of Embraer E190 jets and replacing them with modern and more efficient Airbus A220s.
The airline expects to save as much as $100 million in maintenance costs. The Chief of Finance at JetBlue, Ursula Hurley, commented during last year’s financial earnings call saying,
"In addition to better economics, we have already realized $70 million to-date in maintenance savings, and we now expect to realize $100 million in maintenance cost savings through the end of this year, up from the original $75 million goal we previously forecasted. Once we are through this transition types, we expect a more meaningful tailwind to our costs as we return to operaling just two fleet types.”
The A220s are up to 25% fuel efficient, offer nearly 40% more passenger capacity, and have lower maintenance costs than the E190. According to Ursula Hurley,
"Our laser focus on controllable cost execution delivered in the first quarter, beating our revised outlook range. We took a more granular look at our fixed costs, and implemented several cost reductions across our business. In addition, our structural cost program and fleet modernization are on track to deliver around $275 million in cumulative savings this year."
