Alaska Airlines new routes include possible Hawaiian Airlines replacement

Alaska Airlines has introduced a handful of new routes, including a connection between Honolulu and Ontario, California, as well as new flights from Anchorage and Portland.

As flagged by Ishrion Aviation, Alaska Airlines is scheduled to add four new routes to its network. This includes flights between Honolulu Daniel K.

Inouye International Airport (HNL) and Ontario International Airport (ONT), Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) and Sacramento International Airport (SMF), Anchorage and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW), and Portland International Airport (PDX) and Fairbanks International Airport (FAI).

Hawaiian Airlines already operates the Honolulu to Ontario, California itinerary, offering daily flights with its Airbus A321neo aircraft.

However, the carrier’s booking engine showed that starting June 12, Alaska Airlines will operate flight HA7271, meaning that the flights will be operated under Hawaiian Airlines’ designator code.

The Alaska Airlines operated flight is scheduled to depart at 13:20 local time (UTC -10). In the following weeks, the itinerary showed up daily, with Hawaiian Airlines offering HA7271 to its passengers and its own flight to Ontario, flight HA80. Flight HA80 departs Hawaii at 12:15 in June.

Both HA7271 and HA80 show up on Hawaiian Airlines’ booking engine as far as November, potentially indicating that the two airlines could now be offering a double-daily flight on the route.

Data from Cirium’s Diio Mi airline planning system showed that since Hawaiian Airlines restarted flights between Honolulu and Ontario in March 2021 – it last served the route in February 2004 – it has been the only airline to operate the itinerary.

Between May 2006 and December 2007, American Trans Air (ATA), or ATA Airlines, also served the route.

Cirium’s Diio Mi also showed that out of the three new routes, only one will have competition in 2025, namely flights between Anchorage and Detroit. Delta Air Lines has scheduled daily flights on the itinerary in June, July, and August.

The carrier had served the route during the same three months in 2021 (twice weekly) and in 2024 (thrice weekly). However, the itinerary has yet to appear on Alaska Airlines’ website.

Nevertheless, flights from Anchorage to Sacramento and Portland to Fairbanks, Alaska, have no competition.

Alaska Airlines briefly operated flights on the latter route, with daily flights being offered between June 2013 and August 2013 and June 2014 and August 2014.

While it should come as no surprise that Alaska Airlines is increasing its presence in Anchorage and Honolulu, Portland has been and will continue to be an important part of the airline’s and the group’s network.

In June 2022, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines had 9,789 weekly flights from/to Portland , growing to 10,093 in June 2023.

In June 2025, the two carriers’ schedules at the airport will increase to 11,439 weekly flights and 1.5 million seats, an improvement of 6.2% and 6.1% year-on-year (YoY), respectively.

During Alaska Air Group’s investor presentation on December 10, 2024, where the company presented the ‘Alaska Accelerate’ plan, the group outlined that Portland would free up Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA).

While the former will become a major West Coast connecting hub, the latter will transform into a hub welcoming high-value international traffic.
